Amsterdam and Open Source

Today it was announced on that the municipality Amsterdam will reserve 300.000 Euro in 2007 to start an experiment with Open Source and Open Standards. Apparently, in Amsterdam the civil servants got tired of the Microsoft vendor lock-in. In addition, according to this news item on

  • Open Source software should guarantee access to data much longer than it is the case using proprietary standards
  • Amsterdam plans to offer open software to all departments if the test is successful (current contract expires in 2008).
  • The capital city signed a manifest of a couple of big municipalities in favour of using Open Source software by government.
If you ask me, they can save a lot of money and agony this way too!
